Prostejov Challenger: Florian Mayer ousted in second round; other seeds advance to the quarters!

The Unicredit Czech Open, an ATP Challenger event in Prostejov, Czech Republic, saw its first massive upset on Wednesday.

Top seed and tournament favourite, Florian Mayer, was stunned by Teymuraz Gabishvili, ranked #144 in the ATP rankings, in the second round of the Red Clay tournament.

Gabishvili, took the initial possession in the first set by breaking his higher-ranked counterpart and held his serve to comprehensively bag the first set 6-4.

Mayer, failed to come back from the first set deficit, as his relatively inexperienced rival stood tall to break him in the penultimate games of the second set, and ultimately went on to take the second set 7-5.

However, the rest of the second round matches didn't record any major upset.

Eighth seed Jan Hajek had little trouble defeating the world #280 Damir Dzumhur. The experienced Czech won 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 to storm into the quarterfinals.

Albert Montanes, seeded third, made short work of Marek Semjan 6-1, 6-4 to cruise into the quarterfinals.

Veteran player on the tour - Radek Stepanek, who got a wild card for the tourney, dug his way to the quarters by outclassing Jan Mertly 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 in the pre-quarters.

Sixth seed Lukas Rosol, who came into the limelight by defeating Rafael Nadal at the Wimbledon last year, powered into the last eight by defeating Dusan Lojda 7-5, 6-3 in straight sets.

Albert Ramos, who has been seeded sixth for the tournament, breezed past Andrey Golubev 6-1, 6-3 to book his place into the quarterfinals.

In the last match of the day, Jiri Vesely of Czech Republic sealed a thriller against Jack Sock. Vesely came from a set down to beat his American opponent 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 and eventually moved on to the quarterfinals.

The players who have made it into the last eight, have assured themselves € 3100 along with 25 ATP ranking points.
