"Playing on the centre court is the best feeling"- Heather Watson

By Wimbledon

When Heather Watson was bedridden with glandular fever earlier this year, she could not help wonder if she would even be a part of this years Championships at Wimbledon.

“When I was at home and not feeling well, I was stressing a bit and saying to my Dad: ‘I need to play Wimbledon, I need to play the grass-court season, I cannot miss it.’ And he was like: ‘Listen, you have got to get well first, you can't be thinking about that.’ But I am here and I am playing, I am so grateful and thankful.”
Watson's return to the All England Club is another step on the road to recovery after her two month lay-off. The Championships gave the 21-year-oldsomething to aim towards during these dark days at home.
As nice as it was to spend an extended period of time with her parents in Guernsey – aplace she normally only spends two weeks of the year – the 21-year-old was desperate to be back in time to play at her favourite tennis venue.

“I absolutely love it,” said Watson, currently ranked No.57. “For me that's the best thing about tennis, playing on Centre Court in front of everybody and winning - that is just the best feeling in the world. That is why I do it.”

After making her return at the French Open, Watson has picked up some decent match time on the grass, playing four matches in Birmingham and Eastbourne, including one of the best wins of her career, beating world No.27 Varvara Lepchenko in straight sets.

Watson’s break has renewed her enthusiasm for the sport. “I haven't had a break longer than three weeks since I was six years old,”she said. “It was nice to have a little mental and physical break.”

Watson faces a tough opener on Tuesday against world No.53 Madison Keys. The 18-year-old American has long been tipped for big things ever since she won her first WTA match at the age of 14, before beating Serena Williams 5-1 in a World Team Tennis exhibition match just a few months later.

Watson will draw on the experience of reaching the third round last year, in which was knocked out by eventual runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska, who she could potentially play at the same stage again this year if both make it through.

“The experience of last year is good,” said Watson, "Before last year I hadn't won a singles match [at Wimbledon] in seniors or juniors. I was very pleased to get a win because I put a lot of pressure on myself.”

Wimbledon Players Party!

The likes of Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Ana Ivanovic were seen sizzling at the Wimbledon players party held late night on Thursday.
The main draws of the SW19 will be revealed today!!

"We feel proud to represent India in Grand Slams" - Divij & Purav!

Purav Raja and Divij Sharan have made it into the main draw of the Wimbledon Championship and feel proud to represent the nation in majors.
"It was a great experience playing for Indian at the Davis cup ties for the both of us and it will be as special a feeling to be representing India at Wimbledon. It's always been my most favourite Slam so I am really happy to be making a break through here," Divij told PTI from London.
"Well, I think our mixture of game styles gel well together and make it difficult for our opponents to come up with set patterns to beat us. We also have now figured out a few separate plans based on our strengths from the net to beat top pairs. We are working and practicing together and we get along very well off court too," Raja said.

John McEnroe backs Nadal to be seeded #4 for the Wimbledon Championship!

2013 Roland Garros Champion Rafael Nadal dropped a place to #5 in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings a few weeks back despite of successfully defending the title at the French Open. This has led to his #5 seeding for this years SW19 which decides the seeding purely on the basis of rankings and the performance of the player on the grass surface.

"In my opinion there is no doubt he should be in the top four," said McEnroe to the ESPN via conference call.

“I don’t think anyone would be put out, whatsoever. Wimbledon is the only one of the four majors that can change the seedings. I don’t know how they do it exactly, apparently there’s some kind of formula, but clearly he should be one of the top four seeds in my book."

"If he ran into Ferrer in the quarter-finals it would be the same old, same old because Ferrer is used to running into one of the big four in the last eight. But if Nadal played Djokovic in the quarters, or possibly Murray or Federer, that would be a big difference, and absolutely wrong for that to happen, in my opinion," he further added.

The main draws will be out on Friday!

Marion Bartoli pulls out of Eastbourne due to injury!

28-year-old Marion Bartoli has withdrawn from the Aegon International 2013, an WTA Premier event, currently underway in Eastbourne, Great Britain, due to viral illness.

Bartoli, who defeated Italian Flavia Pennetta, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, gave walkover to second seed Li Na of China in the second round.

I’m really disappointed to have to withdraw, since it’s so nice here and I have always done well at this tournament," she said in a statement.

She added, “I have a virus and a fever and am really feeling terrible. I started feeling this way on Monday but it has gotten worse.
"
“I’m hoping to be back on the court after a few days of rest to get ready for Wimbledon,” concluded Marion Bartoli, who has got the 15th seed for the Wimbledon Championship 2013.

John McEnroe and Chris Evert pick Novak Djokovic as their favourite for the SW19 Championship!

Novak Djokovic has done enough in the past few years to prove his capability. The world #1 has beaten all the top players regularly on the tour and the major slams as well.

But, after being edged out by the 'King of Clay' Rafael Nadal in a thrilling 5-setter encounter in the semifinals of the Roland Garros, the question arises - Will Djokovic win the SW19 this year?

Djokovic has been in his prime form this year, winning the Australian Open 2013.

However, Rafael Nadal, who came back from a long break due to a knee-injury, brushed aside his Serbian counterpart and eventually went on to take the title at Roland Garros.

7-time Wimbledon Champion and the Defending Champion here - Roger Federer will also look to stun his critics by claiming the Championship on his favourite surface.

Andy Murray has also been impressive on the grass. The Brit reached the finals of the Wimbledon last year where he lost to Federer, but came back strong to clinch the gold-medal at the London Olympics 2013 with a sweet revenge over the Swiss ace.

Tennis greats like John McEnroe and Chris Evert have chosen Djokovic as their man!

"I think it is a tougher call to see who the favourite would be. I would pick Djokovic first and Murray second," McEnroe quoted in a conference call with the ESPN reporters.

"I think Murray will be hungrier not playing the French, maybe a little fresher, then Roger, because he still has such a great game for grass. It's tough to win it back-to-back at his age. Rafa having come back so great... maybe I'm wrong, because I thought he would be a little tired. That would be the order if I had to pick 1 to 4," he added.

Chris Evert said, "Djokovic comes to mind only because I think the disappointment at the French Open. I have a sneaking suspicion that Federer has put all his eggs in one basket and he's gunning for Wimbledon. It's the only Grand Slam that he really has a legitimate chance at. I don't mean that against him, it's just that the competition is so good."

The main round of the Championships kicks-off on 24th June!

'Super' Saina storms into quarterfinals of Indonesia Open

Defending Champion Saina Nehwal made short work of Sayaka Takashahi of Japan 21-13, 21-19 to sail into the quarterfinals of the Djarum Indonesia Open Super Series 2013 in Jakarta.

The world #2 , who has not been in her prime form, carrying a win/loss record of 15/6 this season, showed signs of a good comeback.

The Japanese took early possession by opening up a 5-2 lead in the first set. However, Saina Nehwal, seeded second, produced some brilliant smashes all around to overtake her opponent 9-6. The lead was maintained throughout and Saina eventually went on to grab the first set 21-13.

In the second set, again, Takashahi, who has an impressive career win/loss record of 61/20, bought in some tricky shots and took a 11-9 lead halfway down the set. But again, the Hyderabadi played her heart out by covering the lead at 19-19. After the horns being locked up in the thrilling second set, Saina produced phenomenon drop shots and made her opponent run here and there like a hungry chicken and clinched the second set 21-19.

A huge win for Saina today which will certainly boost her morale ahead of the quarterfinals tie. Moreover, the exit of dangerous Chinese duo of Wang Shixian and Wang Yihan has brightened up her chances of winning the title.
